Nicky highlights underused travel scheme for jobseekers

Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan is highlighting a discount travel initiative designed to assist jobseekers in getting to interviews after it was revealed that take up of the scheme is considerably lower in Loughborough than most other parts of the country.

The Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card, an initiative supported by the Rail Delivery Group on behalf of Britain’s train companies, is available to jobseekers who have been out of work for 12 weeks or longer. The scheme offers jobseekers a 50% discount on train fares as they travel to interviews, to the Jobcentre or to and from training.

Whilst jobseekers in British parliamentary constituencies have, on average, made use of the scheme 904 times in the past year in Loughborough just 40 journeys have been made by those seeking work under the initiative.

Nicky said “We are very fortunate in Loughborough to have low levels of unemployment but at any point in time there are still people out of work and looking for a job; we need to do all that we can to make finding employment as easy as possible.

“It’s great to see the train companies and Jobcentre Plus working together to give jobseekers a helping hand. The cost of travel can sometimes be a barrier to getting to interviews and training, however it is initiatives like these that are making the difference in getting people into work.”

Paul Plummer, Chief Executive of the Rail Delivery Group, said “Getting more people into work is part of our long-term plan to change and improve. The partnership railway is committed to spreading economic prosperity across the country. Over half a million discount journeys were made in the last year but we want to make sure that everyone who is eligible to discounted journeys, in all parts of the country, know about the discounts available.”

Jobseekers can apply for the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card through their local Jobcentre Plus. If you have been out of work for between 3 and 12 months (3 to 9 months for 18 to 24 year olds) then you will be entitled a saving of 50% on most rail fares.
