Mountsorrel Heritage Group “brings history alive” says local MP

Nicky Morgan has praised a local group who have been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant of £22,800 recently. The Mountsorrel Heritage Group has been given the money to create the ‘Mountsorrel Archive’ and website to promote the village’s rich history.

Nicky, along with other guests, visited an exhibition at the Mountsorrel Library last Thursday morning to meet members of the group who were showcasing their project.

Whilst there, Nicky learnt some more about the project, and the village’s interesting history. The Group showed her around some of their historical documents and photos .

The Mountsorrel Archive project will be overseen by a project group led by local resident, Keith Foster.

Nicky commented:

“It was truly fascinating to hear about Mountsorrel’s rich history. I learnt some interesting facts; at one time Mountsorrel had 32 pubs and that the Scouts have a long tradition in the village which I’m pleased to say continues today!

“This project really brings history alive, and I congratulate the organisers for their passion and hard work.”

Keith added:

“Today’s event has been a real success and a good start to the project which will run until the end of next year. We have already received contributions of photographs and newspaper articles from members of the public but if anyone has anything about Mountsorrel they wish to contribute to the archive please contact me.”
