My Week in Westminster - 31st March 2017

Attended the Prime Minister’s statement on Article 50 – this week, the UK’s permanent representative to the EU handed the Prime Minister’s letter to the President of the European Council invoking Article 50. This means that the official process for the UK to leave the EU is now underway.

Voted in the remaining stages of the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill – this week was the final opportunity to discuss the terms of the Bill, as well as the two amendments on Parliamentary scrutiny and the rights of EU nationals in the UK which were passed in the Lords.

Helped secure a debate on exiting the EU and Science and Research – I recognise the importance of the EU for Loughborough University and so, in the debate, I highlighted the need for the Government to secure continued access to EU collaboration and funding in their Brexit negotiations.

Met with NHS England to discuss their proposals for Glenfield’s Children’s Heart Surgery Unit - during the meeting, local MPs grilled NHS bosses about their proposal to stop surgery at the unit and the impact this could have on other vital services, especially paediatric intensive care and ECMO.
