Over the past few days several local residents have spoken with me about the closure of Barrow upon Soar Post Office and what steps are being taken to ensure that a branch is open once more in the near future.
My team and I have been working with local councillors and senior management at the Post Office since August, immediately following the unexpected closure of the branch, to try and resolve this important local issue.
Firstly, it is important to stress that the Post Office are marketing a branch of their business for Barrow upon Soar through their industry recognised website; additionally, they are actively seeking to develop opportunities with postmasters elsewhere who may be looking to widen their portfolio of branches.
The Post Office have informed me that their network of client relationship managers have spoken with national convenience store chains. Regrettably none of these, for various reasons, have expressed a desire to move into Barrow upon Soar at the present time.
I am informed however that it may be possible to reopen a Post Office branch either by relocating the business to an alternative property within the village, or by helping another local business to widen the range of services that they offer. I know that the Post Office are actively pursuing both of these possibilities too.
I understand that Barrow upon Soar Post Office is a service greatly valued by both village residents and those from further afield. We will continue to work to ensure that a sustainable Post Office facility is available in the village once more at the earliest possible opportunity.
